About the Artwork

Established in 1594 by Governor and Captain-General of the Philippines Luis Pérez Dasmariñas, Binondo was intended as a permanent settlement for Chinese immigrants, particularly those who had converted to Catholicism and intermarried with indigenous Filipinos.

The Binondo Pilipino Tsino Festival tradition is believed to bring good luck and long life to both the giver and receiver of the ang pao or the red "money" envelope.

Bright, warm tones and vivid contrasts combined with detailed, celebratory motifs evoke a vibrant and energetic mood. The traditional cultural elements and bold symbolism add a joyful and dynamic feeling of festivity.
