Q&A with Jocelyn Ronquillo
-
Why do you create art?
Art, for me, is expressing what's inside my heart that I couldn't say in words.
-
What does your work aim to say?
It's about what I'm feeling, and through my art, I'm letting the audience know who I am.
-
Why do you make this type of art?
I love doing portraits and realistic pieces. I'm satisfied when I see my works coming to life. I feel like I was on the canvas telling the audience about my emotions. I started drawing in my younger years and never imagined other people would appreciate my work. Then I began to try pencils and my thumb to make a portrait—whose results I genuinely love! That's the time I've experimented using different mediums, but I love oils the most.

How do you make it?
When I feel sad or lonely, I paint, and it's a therapy to my soul. The healing I get when I paint is so satisfying. Every time I paint, I feel like I'm in the world of my subject. I paint with what's in my heart. It takes a while for me to finish it because I have a full-time job, too.

What were some of you the challenges you faced as an artist?
I am not a professional artist in this field. I have no proper schooling on art. One of the challenges I faced is when I couldn't buy some materials because, let's admit, some art materials are expensive.
