Q&A with John Rex Dela Cruz

  • How would you describe your art in one word? Why?

It would be "exploration" because it delves into the realms of imagination, exploring the unknown areas of the mind. Also, art provides a quiet space for relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. My art puts you in tranquility and lets you explore, just like the client I had back when I created a commissioned piece of art for their loved one who passed away; it calmed them, and they explored and cherished their memories.

  • What inspires your art?

My art is a reflection of my childhood, a time filed with the joy of watching cartoons on TV and the inspiration I drew from friends who were passionate about art. Their creations were like windows into their souls, and I was captivated. This early exposure to expressionism has deeply shaped my artistic style, infusing my work with emotional depth and a profound meaning that echoes my thoughts and feelings. My hope is that my art can stir in others a remembrance of their own childhood memories and dreams, inspiring them to hold these precious aspects of their past close.

  • How did you address the challenges in your art journey?

I struggle with burnout; not having enough energy to create anythng drains me. As much as possible, I teach myself to take a break and spend time with the people I love. I usually go outside and take many pictures, get some ideas, and try to sketch them until I create a good combination of concepts.

  • What advice can you give aspiring Filipino visual artists?

Aside from creating, aspiring Filipino visual artists must prioritize their health and well-being while remaining open to new experiences and using resources like AI. I view AI as a valuable tool that can assist us in improving our art adn realizing ideas that may be challenging to execute manually.
