Q&A with Marrel Pajanil

  • Who inspires your art?

My parents inspire this painting of fish and fabric. Before they became teachers, my father was a fisherman, and my mother was a farmer. When I was young, my mother would stitch used cloth to make blankets for us, which inspired the design in the background. This painting humbles me because it reminds me of my family's struggles and how they became successful.

  • What’s your usual creative process?

Before creating, I usually research and immerse myself in the subject. Since my art style is maximalism, I fill every space to express myself. That's how I connect with my audience—by putting the thoughts I can't express verbally into my paintings, poems, or metal sculptures.

  • What’s your view about AI and art?

I treat AI as a friend and tool. While it can imitate what a human artist can do, it cannot replicate the emotions and humanity behind the art. Use AI for references or ideas, but don't let it dictate your art style.

  • What’s the most unforgettable feedback you got from your audience?

As a self-taught artist without formal education, I've often been told, "It's one of a kind." Inspired by Vincent van Gogh's expressionism, this encouragement has motivated me to create more.  I've explored a realistic approach, capturing daily scenes, still life, and sometimes abstracts or portraits.

  • What advice can you give to aspiring Filipino visual artists?

Be true to your art by delving deep within yourself and embracing your spirituality, a place that technology cannot reach. Let the world see what's within you, and work hard to inspire others. Authenticity and dedication to your craft will fulfill you and touch and motivate those who experience your art.
