The Metrobank Foundation (MBFI) celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) program with a night dedicated to honoring art, partners, and stakeholders. Held at The Metropolitan Museum of Manila (The M) in Bonifacio Global City on September 28, 2024, the event brought together past awardees, judges, program partners, and art community members for a night of admiration and celebration.
A highlight of the evening was an exclusive walkthrough of the exhibition “Sibol,” which showcased a blend of historic MADE-winning pieces alongside contemporary works by past awardees. Curated by Foundation University-Dumaguete’s Fine Arts Department, led by Ms. Sandra Palomar, the sensory-rich exhibitions invite visitors to explore the evolution of Philippine art.
The event also highlighted the program “The Legacy Night,” which recognized critical figures in Philippine art, including former MADE judges, such as artist and critic Cid Reyes, curator Ricky Francisco, architect Philip Recto, and arts administrator Dindin Araneta.
MBFI also honored its program and advocacy partners with a designed 40th anniversary token: a brass sculpture called “Binhi” (seed), crafted by two-time MADE awardee Architect Jonathan Dangue. This sculpture symbolizes the potential and growth of future generations of artists when nurtured.
MPFI President Aniceto Sobrepeña reflected on how the exhibition’s theme, “Sibol” (growth), mirrors the transformation of the MADE program itself. He noted the artworks reflect the socio-political landscape of the Philippines, evolving from depicting challenges and aspirations to exploring themes of identity and purpose.
When art and artists grow, we all grow.”
Some of the artworks in the exhibit offer a unique sensory experience, allowing viewers to engage with them through specific senses–such as smell (olfactory), sound (auricular), touch (tactile), taste (gustatory), and sight (visual).
In another section of the exhibit, titled “Metathesis of Styles,” recent works by award-winning artists are showcased, highlighting their evolving styles and artistic growth.
The “Sibol” exhibition is open to the public at The M’s 2nd-floor North and 3rd-floor South Galleries until October 19, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends.
