In celebration of the 213th birthday of revolutionary Melchora Aquino, more popularly known as Tandang Sora, a museum dedicated to her legacy has opened—the Tandang Sora Women’s Museum!
Located within the Tandang Sora National Shrine grounds in Brgy. Tandang Sora, Quezon City, the museum not only honors Aquino’s contributions during the Philippine Revolution, providing food, medical care, and shelter to Katipuneros but also celebrates the achievements of Filipino women throughout history.
Architect Gerard Lico, the museum designer, made it look like a portal to the colonial era when Tandang Sora played an essential role in Philippine history. A two-story building with exhibit halls, educational spaces, and newly commissioned artworks creates an immersive experience for visitors.
Curated by visual artist Sandra Torrijos, it displays rare historical artifacts to contemporary works significant to the evolution of women’s rights and other cultural contributions. It’s a space to celebrate how women conquered the challenges and mistreatment from the past and educate visitors, especially the younger generation, on how women’s empowerment has been significant ever since.
