About the Artwork
"Kayod" was inspired by an article published by Rappler Philippines in 2016. The report, written by Mara Cepeda, revolves around the six practices in combatting child labor in the Philippines' sugarcane industry.
The narrative begins as the 18-year-old Harel Ben Conejar tells his story of how he worked in the sugarcane farms at eight. He was forced to work to pay for his living and school expenses.
Textured brushstrokes and muted earthy tones blend with contrasts of blue and red to highlight the figures' expressions and postures, capturing human emotion and the weight of everyday struggles, fostering a reflective and contemplative mood.
